Hulu.com pushes to revive TV advertising on the Web
International Herald Tribune – Apr 6, 2008
For movies, Hulu plans to allow viewers the option of watching a “preroll,” a two-minute movie trailer at the beginning, instead of intermittent commercials. It has not tried this, however, for shorter programs, knowing that asking viewers to first sit still for two minutes of commercials just to see a 22-minute sitcom is unlikely to be acceptable. “The industry is running away from prerolls,” Colaco said. YouTube has been slow to explore ways of generating revenue.

Captivating an Audience. In 1941, the first TV spots were broadcast — for a ticking Bulova watch. In 1999, Internet advertising broke the $2 billion mark… (No word yet on the advertisers. ) The project is part of an expanded ad campaign approved by the Metro board last summer to boost operating revenue. Metro receives about $35 million a year from advertising, the largest source of revenue that does not come from fares, fees or local governments. By expanding advertising, Metro hopes to earn an additional $3 million in ad revenue this year, officials said. Based on preliminary projections, Metro could receive $110,000 from a single motion-activated ad at Farragut West for one month, CBS Outdoor and Metro officials said. The interactive ads are more expensive to install but more appealing, because they allow advertisers to frequently change them. They also bring in more dollars than the station-blanketing ads that are also part of Metro’s push for a new look.

Microsoft to go Massive on in-game advertising
Siliconrepublic.com – Apr 6, 2008
2008 Microsoft is working hard to capture one segment of the lucrative internet advertising business that rivals Google and Yahoo! may very well struggle with the burgeoning in-game advertising space. The software giant, which is also a prominent player in the PC and console games market with its X-box family, yesterday revealed that its wholly owned subsidiary Massive Inc has signed up over 200 blue-chip advertisers to run campaigns in Europe and North America. Massive, which can run dynamic, in-game advertising without affecting the game experience, yesterday completed an audit by Interactive Media Services Group to verify accuracy and said it will undergo regular, annual audits to ensure consistent impression counting. A second study was carried out with Interpret LLC, a new media research firm, which looked into the brand impact of in-game advertising. Sportswear giant Adidas tested ads it ran through the Massive Network in Major League Baseball
