Microsoft wants ‘self-regulation’ of consumer privacy in…
Seattle Times – Apr 11, 2008
The company, responding to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requests for comments on its own plan for self-regulating online advertising, submitted a five-tiered system to protect consumer privacy. (Quick question: Does “self-regulate” qualify as an oxymoron?)Microsoft is calling for “distinct privacy standards in five key circumstances: when site visitors? data is collected for online advertising, when ads are delivered on unrelated sites, when sites engage in behavioral advertising, when personally identifiable information is used, and when sensitive personal data is used,” according to a.

EU agrees tobacco advertising restrictions

But Britain has opposed the plans as too weak with Alan Milburn, the Health Secretary, vowing to press ahead with even tougher legislation in this country. Only Britain and Germany objected to the plans on the table at talks in Brussels to end sponsorship by tobacco companies of sports and other events with “cross-border implications”, as well as removing tobacco advertising in print and on air. The move has little impact in Britain, with government measures in the pipeline for tougher restrictions on tobacco advertising in the media. Meanwhile, Formula One is already committed to end tobacco sponsorship of motor racing in 2006.

Eyes on the prize
economist.com – Apr 11, 2008
Yahoo! responded with a letter whose subtext was, “keep it friendly, please, we’re only holding out for more money”. At the same time, Mr Yang was planning another tactic: to stall, by making everything really, really complicated. Step one was to feign an imminent advertising alliance with Google, which Yahoo! announced on Wednesday. This consists of a brief trial, during which Google, which dominates both web searches and the advertising that goes with them, would place ads next to less than 3% of Yahoo!’s search results in America. The volumes are trivial, but the agreement succeeded in frightening Microsoft, which wants Yahoo! precisely in order to become an advertising counterweight to Google… Together with the Yahoo! brands, the resulting company would outdo even Google as a web power. That, indeed, might leave almost everybody happy. Microsoft would build a rival to Google in online advertising and search; Mr Murdoch would at last clarify and quantify a valuation for MySpace; and Yahoo! might claim that it put up a tough fight and did not sell out to the forces of darkness (Microsoft) alone. Only Time Warner would be left out, since it would then be stuck with AOL, a troubled child it has been longing to rid itself of with honour. A combination of Yahoo! and AOL, by contrast, would be much less impressive. It would be a force in display (rather than search) advertising, and it would have impressive numbers of instant-messengers and e-mailers. But it would lack a serious social network.

“There’s tremendous interest from a reader perspective and yet the dollars haven’t always followed. I’ve never heard a good explanation for it. “Adds Sam Martin, chief advertising officer of The Boston Globe: “I’ve worked in Michigan, Ohio, Delaware, New Jersey–it’s been the same in every place I’ve been. We’ve had a difficult time selling advertising into sports. “But as the industry struggles to staunch the bloodletting in advertising revenue, the time has come for a second look. The chronically underperforming sports section stands out as an underexploited opportunity to generate dollars. Church adverts avoid mention of Christianity
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 11, 2008
Posters produced by the Churches’ Advertising Network will show stark pictures of a neo-Nazi raising a finger to the camera and lines of cocaine on a mirror set against the slogan “What would love do now?” The posters are designed to evoke a spiritual response rather than promote an overtly Christian message, and they coincide with growing alarm. The images will be displayed on high street hoardings across the country and pinned up in telephone booths to compete with cards advertising the services of prostitutes.

Revenue trumps art at Pittsburgh airport
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – Pittsburgh Post Gazette – Apr 11, 2008
Jim Ferlo, who has supported Mr. Calaboyias in his bid to keep the sculpture in place, called the decision to remove it “reprehensible. ”

“Personally I’m sick and tired of all the gratuitous advertising everywhere in our face. So, obviously, if I were on that board I would be anathema to this action,” he said. Ferlo said that if the board does remove the work, it should competitively bid the space that will be used for advertising, find another appropriate location for Silver Grid Wall, and offer Mr. Calaboyias space elsewhere at the airport to do “another significant work.
