Perhaps this suggests something about Obama — or maybe it suggests something about his supporters. The examples are many. They are to be employed under a new contract, which is being negotiated between the executive and consultants’ representative groups. The talks have been ongoing for more than two years but are believed to be close to an end, as sides negotiate the final details of new working arrangements. Making up the difference is currently the No. 1 topic in the newspaper industry. Last year, overall newspaper advertising fell 7. 9 percent, including a 9. 4 percent falloff in print advertising, offset somewhat by an 18. 8 percent increase in online advertising, according to the Newspaper Association of America, an industry group. The NAA is holding its own conference concurrently with the vendors’ exhibition in Washington, which also coincides with the annual meetings of The Associated Press and the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

Earlier this month, the company’s Gannett Outdoor division installed radio equipment in bus shelters around midtown Manhattan, playing WBBR-AM, the new business news station. WBBR paid $150,000 for two months of radios and ad posters at 25 shelters and for posters only at an additional 25. But the radios were installed without the approval of the New York City Transportation Department, which ordered Gannett to pull the plug last week.
