Claire Beale on Advertising: BBH’s hot-toddy for ailing Johnnie Walker
Independent, UK
A decade ago Johnnie Walker was on the critical list. The world’s biggest-selling whisky brand was losing market share and confidence. Then he got an advertising makeover. It was so successful, last week he became poster boy for the power of advertising to revive a business. Johnnie Walker has scooped the top gong at the advertising industry’s Effectiveness Awards and catapulted the transformational potency of advertising into the headlines. As adland hurtles towards recession, it needs headlines like this; stories like Johnnie Walker’s could be advertising’s restorative. Bartle Bogle Hegarty’s advertising turned Johnnie Walker from a tired old boy with an identity crisis (in Europe he was comfy slippers and roaring fires, in Latin America a party drink mixer, in Asia a status symbol) into a global icon.
Houston council could deflate giant advertising balloons
Houston Chronicle, United States

Giant blue gorillas could become an extinct species in Houston, under a proposed ordinance that would ban inflatable advertising balloons and other “attention-getting devices. ”
The gorillas — along with the giant eagles, balloon rockets and Uncle Sams that sometimes appear on the rooftops of car dealerships and other retail outlets — contribute to visual clutter and pose a potentially dangerous distraction to drivers, city officials say. The City Council could vote on the ban at its Wednesday meeting. If approved, the ban also would prohibit flashy and motion-driven devices, such as dancing wind puppets, spinning pinwheels, pennants, streamers and strobe and spotlights. “I call them attention-distracting devices,” said Jeff Ross of the city’s planning commission.

Cricket faces advertising spend cuts
Business Standard, India
This is likely to hit the forthcoming India-England one-day series, to be telecast on Neo Cricket, and Champions League, which will be telecast on ESPN & Star Sports, sources say. Prominent categories that are looking to reduce their cricket budget include some automobile companies, telecom firms, real estate firms and FMCG companies, sources say. At the beginning of this year, experts had estimated cricket-led advertising on television to generate about Rs 1,500 crore revenue in 2008-09, up about 30 per cent from 2007-08 due to important cricket fixtures like Indian Premier League and several other international fixtures of the Indian cricket team. So far, about Rs 900 adverting revenue has been generated by sports channels like Set Max, Neo Cricket, ESPN, Star Sports and Star Cricket, sources say, adding that another Rs 300-350 crore is now under pressure.
Barack Obama used Net effectively for fundraising, organizing and …
Rocky Mountain News, CO
But the volunteer seemed to know I already had voted and this time was looking for my wife. In his victory speech, Obama referred to the number of Americans who had donated as little as $5 or $10 to his campaign, donations generated from the Internet. Those donations added up and enabled Obama to raise more money than McCain and spend more on online advertising. Obama’s online ads could be seen almost everywhere during the campaign, including social-networking sites and YouTube, which didn’t exist four years ago. The ads were at the top of such online newspaper sites as the Rocky Mountain News during parts of the final stretch of the election. Andrew Lipsman, a senior analyst at comScore, tracked the online advertising during the campaign and previously had described Obama’s ads as effectively building his brand of change and recruiting supporters. “I tend to think TV ads are going to create the strongest impression,” Lipsman said, but Obama’s ads were effective in “getting people to join the e-mail list or the movement, donating money, helping (his campaign) build that network of people who are going to be involved.

Entrepreneur Advertising Group Celebrates 5 Years
Kansas City infoZine, MO
When prominent local environmental lawyer William Session needed help to create a brand identity for his new business venture, TWS Construction, it took a reference from the University of Missouri’s Small Business Development Center to connect him with one of the few firms that would consider taking on a young enterprise. Both Session and Martin found a perfect fit with the one advertising firm in Kansas City that embraces small, but growth-driven businesses, Entrepreneur Advertising Group (EAG). In early September, EAG celebrated two milestones, its fifth year in business and successful service to more than 130 companies and entrepreneurs of all shapes and sizes. “Five years ago we found what we thought was a real need in the market,” said Paul Weber, president of EAG. “There was a huge chasm between what small and mid-market companies needed from an advertising firm, and what most agencies would offer. ” EAG and Weber have spent the last five years closing that gap with what he likes to call, big-brand services in small company doses.
