The news isn't surprising since they recently launched their open source G1 cell phone and have been launching nearly everything in their back pockets to bring in more advertising dollars during the recession. However the main point should be that mobile marketing is rip for the taking and that Google may have the perfect solution to move in. "Google may be the first powerhouse company to both capture and dominate the mobile ad market. " Google?s chief Daniel Rubin explains: ?Today we?re announcing a new campaign-level option that allows you to extend the reach of your text and image ads to show your AdWords ads on the T-Mobile G1 the iPhone and other mobile devices that have full (HTML) Internet browsers.

Independent experts on Web advertising have been watching however and what they see is a myriad of difficulties in making brand advertising work on social networking sites. Members of social networks want to spend time with friends not brands. When major brands place banner advertisements on the side of a member’s home page they pay inexpensive prices but the ads receive little attention. Seth Goldstein co-founder of SocialMedia Networks an online advertising company wrote on his Facebook blog that a banner ad “is universally disregarded as irrelevant if it’s not ignored entirely. ” When advertisers invite members to come to pages dedicated to their products they can attract visitors only by investing in expensive creative material or old-fashioned promotions like prize contests.

us Digg This General Motors Corp. ’s bailout plan means that over $300 million in billings is at stake for a handful of local advertising agencies that work for the troubled automaker. As part of its bailout proposal GM (NYSE: GM) said it is considering whether to shed or scale back four of its brands: Saturn Saab Pontiac and Hummer. GM said it will turn Pontiac into a niche brand. That news could translate into large cuts at several local ad shops including Publicis Groupe-owned Digitas Inc. independent Modernista and Wenham-based Mullen all of which handle pieces of GM’s ad business.
