The council’s vote Tuesday adds a 45-day extension to the moratorium on new city permits for billboards that had been set to expire March 26. Planning commissioners are scheduled to consider new rules for supersized billboards digital signs and other outdoor advertising on March 12. The City Council would also have to approve any new rules. The new generation of outdoor ads has infuriated critics who say they are eyesores that distract drivers and could hinder access by rescue crews. Advertising companies insist their signs are safe and stress that courts have repeatedly sided with their right to advertise.
