Medical Device Group Sets New Advertising Guidelines

(BSX) Johnson& Johnson (JNJ) and Medtronic Inc. (MDT) on Thursday outlined a set ofadvertising principles. The move comes after some Senate lawmakers threatened to push legislation totighten device advertising regulation which is currently split between theFederal Trade Commission and the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA generallyhas jurisdiction over devices that are implanted inside the body such as heartstents and artificial knees and hips. However advertising rules for devices aren’t as strict as those for drugadvertisements which require companies to submit ads to the FDA for reviewbefore being disseminated and outline how risks and benefits of a drug can beadvertised. Congress would need to enact legislation to give the FDA authorityto regulate device advertising in a manner similar to drug products.

LN) shares rose sharply Friday afterit gave a reassuring outlook for 2009 despite posting a 5. 8% fall in full-year2008 net profit. WPP which runs neck and neck with U. -based mnicom Group Inc. (MC) as theworld’s largest owner of advertising and marketing agencies by revenue gavemore conservative operating margin targets for the year ahead but thoserevisions and like-for-like revenue projections still beat market expectationsdespite the pressure on advertising from the global economic slump. Analysts said WPP now has a more defensive profile following its GBP1.

Bee cuts newsroom staff lowers some pay

Bee managers told the union it would lay off 34 employees — 26 from the newsroom eight in advertising — if the guild agreed to a package of concessions. The company would lay off 53 if the guild rejected the offer. Bee vice president of human resources Linda Brooks confirmed 34 layoffs and added no more layoffs are planned from the bargaining unit this year. The California Media Workers Guild Local 39521 represents 268 workers of the 1126 people who work at The Bee. Sixty-five percent of the voting members supported the contract.
